The industrial IoT platform spent a decade connecting machines, sensors, gateways, and the cloud. The renamed category scores what the machines do with AI once connected, and the transition is the market's confession about where the value actually lives.

The rename that added intelligence

The IoT platform's founding job was connectivity: ingest the telemetry, normalize the protocols, expose the data. The value promise was always supposed to be insight, but the insight arrived slowly, and the market's buyers began to ask a different question: not can you connect it, but can you make it decide.

The AIoT rename answers the question with the category name itself. The AI is no longer an application layered on the platform; it is the platform's center, with the connectivity as the plumbing underneath. The transition is printed on Gartner's market pages, and the vendors are already being scored against the wider frame.

The IoT connected the machines. The AIoT decides what they do.

The September 2025 Magic Quadrant for Global Industrial IoT Platforms, and the transition around it

The published scorecard, under the old name, is the September 2025 edition, with Cumulocity confirmed as a Leader in Gartner's reprint.

Microsoft holds a Leader placement, on Azure IoT Operations enabled by Azure Arc, IoT Hub, Digital Twins, and Copilot, with a roadmap explicitly built around generative and agentic AI, plus the structural advantages of a 300,000-strong partner ecosystem and integrated security through Defender, Sentinel, and Entra.

Litmus is confirmed as a Challenger in the current coverage, having moved up from Niche Player, on its industrial edge data platform with more than 250 industrial protocol drivers and edge orchestration. Losant holds a Niche Player placement, a full-stack platform with more than 712,000 connected industrial assets, with cautions naming the absence of a public marketplace, limited AI and edge analytics innovation, and limited CMDB functionality.

The field's movement, Litmus rising, Losant cautioned on exactly the AI innovation the rename celebrates, is the market's own re-sorting underway.

The platform giant on the rung

Microsoft's placement is the hyperscaler thesis in industrial clothing: the broadest platform, the partner ecosystem, the security stack, and now the agentic layer, Copilot and beyond, pointing at the connected factory.

The argument deserves scrutiny for what it implies. The industrial buyer choosing the hyperscaler platform is choosing integration with the cloud estate over industrial depth, and the trade shows up in the field's cautions: the specialists lead on protocol breadth and edge orchestration, and the platform giant leads on ecosystem and security.

Two hundred fifty protocol drivers is a moat built one driver at a time, and the quadrant scores both moats, the specialist's depth and the platform's breadth, on the same axes.

The edge data challenger

Litmus's rise from Niche to Challenger is the edition's most instructive movement, because it names the market's real frontier: the edge.

Industrial AI does not run in the cloud. It runs next to the machine, where the latency, the reliability, and the data volume live, and the edge data platform that normalizes 250 protocols and orchestrates workloads at the machine layer is selling the capability the rename implies. The cautions attached, no cloud infrastructure of its own, reliance on the hyperscalers, manufacturing-heavy reach, are the price of focus.

The rise says the market now scores edge orchestration as a Challenger-grade capability, and the specialists that built it are moving up the chart.

What AIoT adds to the criteria

The transition name carries criteria the old name did not. AI models at the edge, trained, deployed, and monitored next to the asset. The data quality and labeling machinery that industrial AI depends on. The governance layer for models that make operational decisions, because a misjudging model on a production line is a safety event, not a dashboard error. And the agentic layer forming above: the agents that interpret the telemetry and propose the actions.

Each of these is a new scoring surface, and the vendors' current placements, earned under the IoT criteria, will be re-scored against them when the renamed edition publishes. The rename will re-score the field before the field finishes re-scoring itself.

What the transition leaves undecided

The honest limit is the transition's own midpoint. The scorecard on file carries the old name, the first edition under the new one has not surfaced, and the placements in between describe a field mid-migration.

The other limit is the record: Leader and Challenger placements are confirmed, the remaining field is partially public, and the cautions that would tell a buyer which platform's AI story is real versus narrated have not been widely republished. In a market whose rename is about AI, the buyer's hardest question, which AI is in production, is the one the public record answers least.

Four questions for the industrial buyer

Which half of the purchase is the machine's and which is the cloud's? The specialist and platform camps split on the answer. Match the purchase to where the data actually lives and the latency actually matters.

What runs at the edge today? The rename implies AI at the edge. Ask for the models deployed at customer sites, the hardware they run on, and the governance around them, because that is the criteria the next edition will score.

Can the platform speak the protocols of your floor? 250 drivers is the benchmark the specialists set. Count your own protocols against the vendor's list, in writing.

Is the AI story native or narrated? The transition name invites narrated AI. Ask which AI capabilities ship in the current version, and which live in the roadmap, and weight the answer against the placement.
