Gartner's inaugural Market Guide for Answer Engine Visibility Tools, published March 9, 2026, opens with a pair of numbers that should keep a marketer up at night: nearly 32 percent of buyers now use generative AI throughout the purchasing process, while CMOs still allocate 22.8 percent of digital channel budget to SEM and SEO. The buyers moved to answers. The budget has not caught up.

The answer is the new ranking

Answer engine optimization is what SEO becomes when the search result is not a page of links but a single generated answer, spoken or written, in ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity.

The ranking question changes with it. Instead of where a brand appears among ten blue links, the question becomes whether the model names the brand at all, what it says, and what it cites. The Market Guide defines the category around exactly that: tools that help organizations understand brand visibility, monitor brand sentiment, track competitor citations, and assess content performance in answer engine results.

Ten blue links became one spoken answer, and the one answer is worth measuring differently.

The March 2026 Market Guide for Answer Engine Visibility Tools, and the note before it

The guide published March 9, 2026, authored by Noam Dorros, Isoke Mitchell, and Serena Philip. It is the inaugural edition of a category Gartner had already flagged in an Innovation Insight on October 17, 2025, titled Assess AEO and GEO With Answer Engine Visibility Tools.

The Innovation Insight carried the caveat that now defines the category's honest limits: these tools address AI search challenges, but they also introduce concerns about data accuracy and the risk of overreliance. Gartner named the category and its main failure mode in the same breath, six months before the Market Guide formalized it.

The guide's findings are direct. AEO adoption is no longer experimental, it is a business priority, and answer engine visibility tools are a baseline martech necessity. Gartner's recommendation to enterprise marketing leaders is to integrate the tools as a non-negotiable component of martech strategy, evaluating solutions for autonomous brand visibility enhancement and real-time competitor benchmarking.

The baseline math

Three numbers frame the market. The 32 percent of buyers using generative AI in purchasing, with AI discovery approaching parity with traditional search. The 22.8 percent of digital channel budget still pointed at SEM and SEO. And the market itself: 481 million dollars in 2024, projected to reach 729 million by 2031.

Read the numbers together and the gap is the thesis. Buyers are moving to answers faster than budgets are moving to answer measurement, which means the vendors selling visibility into answers are selling into a market that already exists and a budget that is still catching up. The tools are cheap relative to the spend they are meant to protect, and that is the adoption story.

The field that formed in months

The representative vendor list spans the marketing technology spectrum. Siteimprove, the established website optimization vendor, now measures answer visibility. Semrush, now an Adobe company, brings the SEO tool's audience to the answer format. Evertune, Profound, and IQRush are the category-native entrants.

The field's shape is the same as every martech category before it: incumbents extending their existing visibility business, and specialists born in the new format. The difference is the clock. This category went from Innovation Insight to Market Guide in five months, and the vendor announcements followed within weeks.

The expiration date printed inside the category

The guide contains its own disruption notice. Today's market centers on informational visibility, brands appearing in answers to questions. But a seismic shift is underway toward agentic AI, semi-autonomous agents that retrieve information and execute tasks on a user's behalf.

When an agent books the flight instead of answering which airline is best, visibility is no longer the whole game. The agent decides, and being named in the answer becomes being selected in the transaction. The guide named the category and its expiration date in the same document, which is either unusually honest or unusually confident.

The tools that measure answers will have to measure decisions, and the category's second act is already written into its first guide.

The honest limit of measuring answers

A Market Guide names representative vendors and does not rank them, and ranking is genuinely hard here. An LLM's answer varies across sessions, models, and users, so the visibility a tool reports is a probability, not a position.

The data accuracy caveat from the Innovation Insight is the buyer's real risk. A tool that reports a brand's answer-engine presence is sampling a probabilistic system, and the sample can flatter or bury depending on method. Measuring what a model says is measuring a moving target, and the vendors disagree on how to aim.

Four questions for the visibility buyer

What is the measurement actually sampling? Ask how often, across which models, and with what prompting methodology. The answer determines whether the report is a map or a vibe.

Does the tool track citations and sentiment, not just mentions? Being named is not the same as being recommended. The guide's own criteria separate visibility from sentiment.

What happens when agents start executing? The guide names the shift itself. Ask the vendor what its agentic-transaction roadmap measures, and when.

Which budget does the tool protect? If 22.8 percent of digital spend still sits in SEM and SEO, the visibility tool's first job is defending that spend during the transition. Ask for the bridge, not the destination.

Gartner Market Guide

Category definition, representative vendor list, and recommendations in this article draw on Gartner's Market Guide for Answer Engine Visibility Tools, the inaugural edition, published March 9, 2026, authored by Noam Dorros, Isoke Mitchell, and Serena Philip. The preceding Innovation Insight, Assess AEO and GEO With Answer Engine Visibility Tools, published October 17, 2025. Market Guides do not rank vendors or name Leaders. Adoption figures, the 32 percent buyer figure, the 22.8 percent budget allocation, and the 481 to 729 million dollar market projections come from the guide's published findings.

This market sits next to Market And Competitive Intelligence Platforms, covered separately on this site. Generative AI should have commoditized this category, and instead Forrester's criteria count kept climbing, because the moat was always licensed source access, not summarization.
