The platform that outgrew the disk array
Enterprise storage was scored on capacity and speed: how much, how fast, how reliably. The market the 2025 quadrant scores is defined differently: products and services supporting block, file, and object workloads, delivered through a centrally managed control plane, using AI-enabled telemetry for SLA-based IT outcomes.
Read the definition's tail: the product is no longer the array, it is the outcome the telemetry guarantees. The storage vendor is now selling a managed result, availability, performance, recovery, with the hardware underneath becoming the delivery mechanism rather than the product.

The September 2025 Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Storage Platforms, and its four-Leader rung

Four Leaders hold the rung. Pure Storage, with its Everpure platform, positioned highest on Ability to Execute and furthest on Completeness of Vision, its twelfth consecutive year as a Leader. Hewlett Packard Enterprise, on Alletra Storage MP and the GreenLake operating model. And Huawei, on OceanStor, deployed in more than 150 countries, with its AI Data Lake framework and a multilayer ransomware protection system claiming a 99.99 percent detection rate.
The Visionary is Hitachi Vantara, on its VSP One unified platform, with cautions around a still-nascent unified file and object offering, a management interface customers describe as outdated, and a limited hybrid cloud footprint.
The twelfth consecutive year
Pure Storage's streak is the market's longest current run, and it deserves a precise reading.
Twelve years spans the entire transformation this market has undergone: the flash era, the software-defined era, the subscription era, and now the AI era. A vendor that led through all four did not just keep pace; it re-founded its product each time, and the current Everpure platform is the fourth generation of that reinvention.
The streak is also the market's consistency test. Storage buyers sign multi-year trust relationships, and the quadrant's longest streak is the closest thing the market has to a brand-level proof that the trust survives the technology cycles.
The cyberstorage criterion
The ransomware criterion is the edition's quietest and sharpest change, and the placements carry it.
Huawei leads with ransomware protection as a named differentiator. Pure Storage ships immutable snapshots through its platform. The market is scoring cyber resilience as a storage capability, and the logic is simple: the storage layer is the last copy, and a platform that cannot guarantee the last copy's integrity against ransomware has failed its most important job.
Dell's cautions show the cost of trailing: the report notes OEM dependence for ransomware detection, with no native cyberstorage, a gap printed on a Leader's citation. The criterion is now table stakes for the rung, and the vendor that lags it is lagging in public.
The AI data platform turn
The market's other new axis is AI readiness, and the Leaders are competing on it directly. Dell's AI Factory with NVIDIA, Huawei's AI Data Lake framework, HPE's positioning of Alletra inside its private cloud, and Pure's real-time enterprise file, all describe the same bet: the storage platform becomes the AI data platform.
The bet's logic is bandwidth-shaped. Training and inference workloads need the data adjacent to the compute, and the storage layer that can feed GPUs at scale becomes part of the AI architecture rather than an appendix to it. The quadrant's criteria have begun pricing that adjacency, and the vendors that built for it first are collecting the placements.
What the streaks and cautions cannot show
The honest limit of the edition is the market's own caution pattern. The Leaders' cautions, Dell's cyberstorage gap and service dissatisfaction, Hitachi's interface complaints, are the parts of the record that matter most to a buyer and the parts the vendor announcements quote least.
The edition is also nearly a year old, and the AI data platform turn is moving faster than the quadrant's cycle. The September 2025 placements describe platforms as they stood in mid-2025, and the GPU-era storage requirements are being rewritten by the workload even as the chart ages.
Four questions for the storage buyer
What is the workload the purchase actually serves? Block, file, object, AI, or a mix. The platform answers differ, and the quadrant averages them. Name the workload before the vendor does.
Is the cyber resilience native or partnered? Dell's caution is the model question. Ask whether ransomware detection and immutable recovery are the vendor's own technology, and see the recovery demonstration.
What does the AI adjacency actually cost? The AI data platform story is real, but it prices differently by vendor. Ask what the GPU-era bandwidth and the data placement look like on your workloads, with the bill modeled.
Is the streak yours to inherit? Twelve years of Pure leadership is a fact about Pure. Ask what the streak's architecture means for your refresh cycle, your exit, and your support tier, because the streak is theirs, not yours.
