Autonomous Operations Platforms for CSP Networks is the name Gartner's market is transitioning toward. Its Peer Insights market page carries the transition in the title itself: CSP Service Design and Orchestration Solutions, transitioning to Autonomous Operations Platforms for CSP Networks. No Magic Quadrant exists under either name in the public record yet. The new name promises zero-touch. The feature list underneath is still an orchestration layer.

The name and the mechanics

Gartner printed the transition inside the market's own title, and the two halves of that title are the whole story. Service design and orchestration is what the market has always sold: the software that designs, orders, and activates network services. Autonomous operations is what the market wants to become: networks that run themselves.

The mandatory features, published on the Peer Insights market page, are the honest mechanics. Capacity management across physical, virtual, containerized, and hybrid network environments. Service order management and orchestration. Fulfillment, the inventory, provisioning, and activation tools. Service and resource management policy tools.

Inventory, provisioning, activation: the trio that has to work before any agent can claim autonomy, and the trio where most CSP operations still live.

The transition printed on the market page

The rename matters because of where it came from. Gartner does not rename a market until the buyers have already moved, and the CSP operations buyers have spent years hearing vendors promise closed-loop automation while signing contracts for orchestration software.

The new name makes the aspiration the category. A communications service provider buying under the old name bought integration machinery. A CSP buying under the new name is buying a destination, zero-touch network operations, and every vendor in the field will now sell the destination while shipping the machinery.

The distance between the title and the feature list is the market's honest state, and Gartner put both on the same page.

The vendor field the old market lists

The Peer Insights market under the transitioning name already lists the vendor field a future quadrant would draw from.

Amdocs with its NFV MANO portfolio and service orchestration, the BSS and OSS incumbent. Ciena with Blue Planet inventory and multi-domain service orchestration, the network vendor's software arm. Comarch's OSS suite. P.I. Works with Configurex, the network configuration specialist. Contrail Service Orchestration, DataMiner, and Ericsson's adaptive inventory, dynamic activation, and dynamic orchestration.

The field spans telecom-native OSS vendors and network equipment makers selling software, the same split that runs through every CSP operations market. The equipment makers know the network. The OSS vendors know the business processes, and autonomy will require both.

The autonomy ladder the category still climbs

Autonomy in network operations is a ladder, not a switch. The rungs are well established: automation that executes a defined task, orchestration that chains tasks across domains, closed loops that act on telemetry without a ticket, and intent-driven autonomy where an operator states an outcome and the network organizes itself.

The old category name, service design and orchestration, sits on rung two. The new name promises rung four. The mandatory features on the market page, capacity management, order management, fulfillment, policy, sit on rungs one and two.

Autonomy is a claim you buy on a ladder, and most of this market's revenue is still collected two rungs below the new name.

The adjacent scorecard that published first

While the CSP-specific quadrant is still forming, the general orchestration market already has a fresh scorecard: the Magic Quadrant for Service Orchestration and Automation Platforms, published August 5, 2026, by Hassan Ennaciri, Daniel Betts, and Chris Saunderson, with Stonebranch named a Leader.

The SOAP quadrant matters to this category because the vendors overlap at the edges. General orchestration platforms reach into CSP environments for workload automation, and CSP orchestration vendors reach outward into enterprise services. The CSP-specific quadrant, whenever it publishes, will inherit both the criteria vocabulary and the boundary disputes of the general one.

A closed loop that needs a human to close it is a promise with a pause, and both quadrants are in the business of measuring exactly how long the pause is.

What the quadrant will have to prove

No placements exist yet, under either the old name or the new one, so the honest exercise is the questions a first edition would have to answer.

What counts as autonomous? The market has no shared definition, and the quadrant's criteria will effectively choose one. Whether policy tools count toward autonomy or toward the old orchestration name will redraw the field. And whether the equipment makers' embedded autonomy competes with or complements the OSS vendors' platforms is a boundary the first scorecard will have to draw in public.

Until it does, the market page's feature list is the closest thing to a definition buyers have.

Four questions for the network operations buyer

Which rung of the ladder is the purchase actually for? Name the outcome: task automation, cross-domain orchestration, closed loop, or intent. The vendor's answer should match the contract's language, not the marketing's.

What closes the loop? Ask which decisions the platform makes without a human ticket, and which ones wait. The ratio is the autonomy score.

Does the vendor span both worlds? A CSP runs physical, virtual, and containerized networks at once, and the mandatory features say so. Ask to see all three in one demonstration.

Will the vendor survive the rename? Under the old name the field was settled. Under the new one every vendor is re-arguing its position, and the buyer's procurement language should be written for the market that is forming, not the one that is ending.
